Invisalign Aftercare – What Do I Do Following Treatment?
One of the most frequently asked subjects we receive enquiries for is Invisalign aftercare. How do you look after your teeth after Invisalign has worked its magic to straighten your teeth? And how do you choose the right dentist for Invisalign?
Invisalign aftercare – what you need to know
Maximise the success of your Invisalign treatment by sticking to the following habits when you start wearing your aligners.
Wear your retainer
Don’t compromise your treatment by failing to wear your retainer each night. Your retainer should be your teeth’s best friend after Invisalign, as it stops your teeth from moving back out of position.
Frustratingly, even after Invisalign treatment, your teeth are belligerent and will attempt to move out of position (and this happens natural as we age too).
To give your Invisalign treatment the best chance of being a permanent fix for your teeth, wear your retainer.
Clean your retainer
Your retainer is worn each night, so it requires a clean, ideally after each wear to stop any nasties like food particles and bacteria from collect in it, and harming and staining your teeth.
Simply soak it in a cleaning solution and leave to sit for a few minutes. Your dentist can recommend an appropriate cleaning solution.
Stop smoking
The link between smoking and gum disease is a direct one. Don’t compromise all of your hard work going through the teeth-straightening process with Invisalign, and then have to go through extractions because of gum disease progression.
We also recommend refraining from smoking during your Invisalign treatment. If you’re a heavy smoker or vaper, this will involve having the aligners out for multiple periods throughout the day, which could derail or delay your Invisalign journey.
Commit to regular hygienist cleanings
Regular hygienist visits (along with refraining from smoking) are your best defence against developing gum disease.

See the dentist for routine check-ups
Seeing the dentist at least once a year is essential for picking up on any developments with your tooth structure, bite, and any clinical issues your mouth might be displaying.
When caught early, movement of the teeth can be corrected using a short-term orthodontic appliance. This becomes much harder for your dentist to address if you haven’t visited in a while, so we encourage you to come in routine check-ups if you can.
