Intense pain and sensitivity could be your tooth trying to tell you it has sustained an infection.

Root canal treatment is the procedure we can carry out to stop the infection leading to eventual tooth loss.

What Is Root Canal Treatment?

Root canal treatment is a procedure we perform to remove infected tooth tissue and dead nerve of a tooth. It takes two or three visits to perform. Once the tooth is cleaned out, we can place a crown over the top.

You might need root canal treatment if:

  • Your tooth has sustained a severe cavity.
  • Your tooth has sustained an injury that has caused the living tissue to die.

FAQs

1. State-of-the-art approach to treating dental infections

Here at The Smile Studios, we use state-of-the-art equipment (our apex locators) that speeds up treatment time, and that can be used repeatedly without putting you at risk of radiation exposure.

Apex locators also make treatment much more predictable and reduce discomfort during the procedure. This technology is a real game-changer in endodontic dentistry.

2. What does root canal treatment involve?

The aim of the treatment is to remove all infections from the root canal. The root is then cleaned and filled to prevent any further infection. Root canal treatment is a procedure. Most courses of treatment will involve two or more visits to your endodontist.

At the first appointment, the infected pulp is removed. Any abscesses that may be present can also be drained at this time. The root canal is then cleaned and shaped ready for filling.

A temporary filling is placed and the tooth is left to settle. The tooth is checked at a later visit and when all the infection has cleared, the tooth is permanently filled.

3. I’m a nervous about treatment – what can you offer me?

We offer IV sedation for patients who might find their dental anxiety overwhelms them whilst being in the dentist’s chair.

This method is completely safe and relaxes you almost immediately.

4. What will my tooth look like after root canal treatment?

In the past, a root-filled tooth would often darken after treatment. However, with modern techniques, this does not usually happen.

If there is any discolouration, there are several treatments available to restore a natural appearance.

5. Will my tooth need a crown?

A tooth that needs root canal treatment will usually have sustained significant decay or have a large filling. For this reason, it’s likely that a crown will need to be placed over the top.

We can create bespoke white crowns that will restore the aesthetic and function of the tooth that has been treated. This will also give it the function it needs to support chewing and biting.
